WHAT IS A SKIMMER?
What is a skimmer? Skimming devices are used by identity thieves to steal credit or debit card personal identifying information (PII). Identity theft from skimmers is becoming a major problem for consumers. Skimmers can be installed easily and quickly on ATM machines. Handheld skimmers can also be used to record restaurant patrons’ credit or debit card information. Once recorded, the information is often sold and used on homemade cards to perpetuate fraud.
Skimming usually occurs during a legitimate transaction. The identity thief who “skims’ the card information may be an employee of the business, or an outsider who installed a skimmer on the merchant’s card reader. The electronic device used to read and record the card data is called a “skimmer.” Identity theft victims have reported skimming at businesses such as banks, arts & craft stores and restaurants.
Skimming is often difficult for consumers to detect. Consumers should regularly review their credit card statements for unauthorized charges. You have a right under federal law to dispute unauthorized credit card charges. You also have a right to a free credit report if you believe you are a victim of fraud or identity theft.
